How to find a map

Topographic maps - United States - Indexes

Geographic Names Information System (GNIS)

Contains information about almost 2 million physical and cultural geographic features in the United States. Can serve as an index to the topographic quadrangle maps.

MapServer

MapServer is an Open Source development environment for building spatially-enabled internet applications. MapServer is not a full-featured GIS system, nor does it aspire to be. Instead, MapServer excels at rendering spatial data (maps, images, and vector data) for the web. MapServer was originally developed by the University of Minnesota (UMN).

Print indexes for each state are kept at the Circulation Desk.

Geologic Maps -- United States - Indexes

National Geologic Map Database

Index for maps and related data about: geology, hazards, earth resources, geophysics, geochemistry, geochronology, paleontology, and marine geology.  A project of the USGS and the State Geological Surveys. Online maps are included in the database or you can search a separate subset of the database that just contains online maps.

Geologic Map Index of.....

Starting in the 1970's, USGS produced "Geologic Map Indexes" for each state. These indexes are comprehensive--they show maps produced by a variety of organizations and authors. Copies of these indexes can be found in our Map Room Annex. Although this bibliography lists papers as well as maps from a wide array of sources, the OSU Geology Library may not have everything mentioned. The map indexes refer you to the bibliography section.

GeoRef Database OSU and OhioLINK access only

Online geoscience database containing over 1.9 million records of North America since 1785, and other areas of the world since 1933. Enter a keyword search for the area and near the bottom of the search screen select Classification Code: Aerial geology, maps and charts.

OSCAR - The OSU Libraries Online Catalog

Do a Keyword search for the area of interest and select Material Type: Printed map About 1% of the map collection in the Geology Library has been cataloged.

State Geological Survey publication lists

Various State Geological Surveys publish map series. Many publication lists are available online from the State Survey.  Select the state from this list. Some of the maps series from various state geological surveys are cataloged.  These maps are filed in the Geology Map Room either by call number or may still be in boxes arranged by state name. These are an on going project and will eventually be filed by call number in the Map Room.
