Rap Music will soon celebrate its 30th anniversary. Unfortunately, libraries and librarians have little to no knowledge of Rap Music genres, resources, and artists. This LibraryWiki article will serve as an important introduction to understanding and researching Rap Music.

Rap is part of a cultural movement known as Hip–Hop. Hip–Hop is an African–American positive response to technology, urban decay, and social despair. Art, music, dance, speech, and dress are elements of the Hip–Hop culture.

This LibraryWiki article will cover a number of popular publications on the cultural and social impact of Rap Music. The body of popular publications on this African–American musical form include secondary sources on a range of topics including music, sociology, urban studies, and African–American studies. Many of the works examined in this article are research pathfinders for the casual reader and the serious music student. Rap Music deserves a place in the academic curricula and on library shelves.

Developing a basic core collection on Rap is not an easy task for a public, academic, or special library. This undertaking requires some commitment of funds and time. Whatever the particular information need of the parent institution, these resources should relate to any level of collection development in Rap music. Materials should not be purchased once but should be updated frequently as new styles and artists emerge. The selection tools used to purchase Rap Music may include reference works such as catalogs, journals reviews in journals, patron input, catalogs, approval plans, and music reviews. The majority of the books, recordings, and other listed materials are available for purchase. --Mama mac 11:07, 5 January 2007 (EST)
