Philosophy
In attempting to escape from society, one is sometimes forced to confront personal challenges that are formidable and frightening. This is especially true if one follows the example set by Henry David Thoreau who used the wilderness as his refuge.
Practice
Examples include the adventures of Chris McCandless (whose story was related in a book and film entitled "Into the Wild"), and John Mallon Waterman, who made epic assaults on Alaska's Mount Hunter and Denali.
Disambiguation
John Mallon Waterman should not be confused with John Waterman, who wrote about the young climber.
