East Asian Information Literacy Project: annual report for 2006-2007

The East Asian Information Literacy Project began October 1, 2007 with funding from the Ohio State University Libraries and Ohio State's Title VI NRC/FLAS East Asian Studies Center (EASC).

Objectives

Project objectives include:

• creating wiki resources focusing on East Asian Studies research resources that can be created and updated by librarians, researchers, and students
• engaging undergraduate students with strong East Asian studies interests as well as appropriate language skills to work on East Asia specific projects in the library in order to become fully information literate and successfully function in East Asian language professional contexts
• facilitating and promoting access to Ohio State's distinctive and valuable library resources in Chinese, Japanese and Korean languages
• providing tutorials on the use of East Asian digital resources
• developing information resources to support researchers in East Asian studies
• working with teaching faculty to develop specific articles for incorporation into course syllabi and web sites as curricular support

Personnel

The project is directed by Maureen Donovan, Japanese Studies Librarian and Associate Professor.

Stephen Horn, a graduate student in the Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures worked as a Graduate Assistant for the Project during the period October 1, 2006 - August 15, 2007.

Other students made significant contributions to the project during its first year, including:

• Shelley Bloom (contributed articles on Japanese-Americans to the Japanese Studies wiki)
• Daniel Bunge (contributed: Mangajin tables of contents to the Japanese Studies wiki and articles about Japanese companies with affiliates in Ohio to the Japanese Company Histories wiki, among other things)
• Hiro Inokuchi, practicum student from SUNY Buffalo (contributed articles about social and environmental issues to the Japanese Studies wiki)
• Yasuko Inoue (contributed articles about Japanese companies to the Japanese Company Histories wiki)
• Yuka Kurihara (contributed articles about Japanese pedagogy journals)

Focus of first year on Japan

Due to the expertise of the project director and the graduate associate during the first year, the focus has been on Japanese research resources. In particular, great effort went into preparing articles in the Japanese Studies wiki, especially during Fall 2006 through Spring 2007. In Spring 2007 a second wiki project began for Japanese Company Histories. This project was initiated to replace an older database and website which is no longer functioning. Another goal is to coordinate with other libraries, developing a shared resource. So far, librarians from University of California, San Diego, University of Hawaii, and University of Pittsburgh are participating. Most of the contributions have come from Ohio State, however, including many recent ones (hence the low numbers of views for some articles in the list below).

In the upcoming 2d year of the project, the focus on Japan will continue, but emphasis will shift toward increasing awareness of this resource and working with teaching faculty to help students become fully information literate in East Asian contexts.

• March 22, 2007 -- presentation to the Shashi (Japanese Company Histories) Interest Group, an affiliate organization of the Association for Asian Studies, Boston MA
• April 26, 2007 -- presentation to a "Wiki Roundtable Discussion" organized by Humanities Information Systems (at Ohio State)
