イタイイタイ病 Itai-Itai Disease
Itai-Itai disease is caused by cadmium pollution from Kamioka mine (presently, famous neutrino physics laboratory is located on the site) owned by Mitsui Mining, Inc. (presently, Mitsui Mining & Smelting, Inc.). The mine's major product is Zinc, but its byproduct cadmium was untreated and dumped into the Jizu river. Toyama city is located in the downstream of the river. The disease was existing since the 1920s, but it had been considered as a local disease. It is named as Itai-Itai disease in 1958, and it is acknowledged as the first pollution disease in 1968. The victims filed a lawsuit against the company in 1968, and won in 1971. This is the first pollution lawsuit won by the victims, and became an important precedent. See also Wikipedia, Itai-itai disease.
