Traditional Japanese cultural artifacts: visual dictionaries

One way to find resources is to do a bibliographical database search for the keyword 「図説」 ("zusetsu"). As of　Nov. 2006 such a search in the Ohio State University Library catalogue (OSCAR) yielded 255 results, among them such quintessentially Japanese things as this:

Using specialized reference books increases your chances of finding glossed images. Even if you don't know the specific name of a material object, you can search for it among images efficiently by specfying the semantic field. One way to take advantage of the Ohio State University Library catalogue is to use the SUBJECTS search function. Say for example, you want to know the names of the main features in a traditional Japanese house. The search Subjects > Architecture, Domestic -- Japan yields 69 citations, among which you'll find books like the following:
