Born in 1892, Leroy D. Barrett was the son of Warren L. Barrett. He was a resident of Columbus, Ohio calling 830 N. High St. his home. On May 27th, 1918 Leroy enlisted in the United States Army at Memorial Hall. Only a day later, on May 28th at 11:30 A.M. Leroy arrived for training at Camp Sherman, OH with the 15th Co. 4th TR. BTN. R-33. The training lasted only month after his intitial enlistment and on June 27th he graduated in Columbus. After the conclusion of his training it was a speedy journey to the final destination across seas; first arriving at Camp Joseph Johnston in Jacksonville, Florida from June 29th to August 8th, then to Camp Stuart in Newport News, Virginia from August 9th to 14th, and finally traveling the seas from August 14th to August 26th on a French ship, named Patria .
Leroy's journal includes much information about the experience of WWI. During his army enlistment that ranged from May 1918, to his discharge in September 1919, he kept a descriptive journal. Along with daily happenings, he recorded contacts of service acquaintances, mathematic equations and conversions to keep track of wages and foreign currency, and a nostalgic photo album with pictures of his parents and dog.
