Library encounters can resemble human interaction on an alien world. If asked, staff members will tell you bizarre stories of human encounters that they have had while engaged in ordinary work activities on seemingly peaceful days.

Librarian: May I help you?
Patron: uh, where is that red book I was reading yesterday?
Librarian: uh....
2. Patron: Excuse me, could you tell me where the adult books are kept?
Librarian: Adult books? You are in the adult fiction section.
Patron: No, I mean the adult books...
3. Patron: Can I check out this surgical atlas?
Librarian: No, I'm sorry that is a reference text. We do have a photocopier and you may copy what you need - no charge.
Patron: That won't do!! I need it in the OR this morning!
Librarian: uh... (note to self - this is one surgeon I will NOT consult)
